In the world of pottery and ceramics, each piece tells a unique story, shaped by the hands that craft it. Ceramics, with its rich history and timeless appeal, has always been a medium of both utility and art. From everyday tableware to intricate sculptures, the versatility of clay allows artists to express their creativity while providing functional beauty to homes. Synceramic, a ceramics studio based in Singapore, exemplifies this blend of artistry and functionality, offering a unique space for creativity to flourish.

The Journey of Synceramic and Its Founder, Ng Yang Ce

Synceramic was established by founder Ng Yang Ce, who has a passion for working with clay. Her journey started over a decade ago during her junior college days, where she discovered her love for creating things with her hands. While she was initially involved in dance and other art forms, her interest in ceramics grew as she began working at a local pottery studio. Over time, Yang Ce honed her skills and gained confidence in her craft, especially during her time at a co-space with artists from the Sculpture Society.

This experience allowed her to develop her unique style, which she now shares with her students. In 2022, after years of working in various spaces, Yang Ce established Synceramic in a rural area near Jurong. The studio, with its high ceilings and outdoor lawn, provides an ideal environment for both her own work and her students’ creations. Yang Ce’s decision to start her own studio was organic, driven by the need for a larger space to accommodate her growing practice and teaching commitments. Today, Synceramic is a creative hub where artists, students, and enthusiasts come together to explore the world of ceramics.

Synceramic’s Offerings: Workshops, Products, and Unique Approach

Synceramic is well-known for its hands-on workshops, with a particular emphasis on hand-building techniques. The basic hand-building course is a popular choice, as it covers techniques such as Pinching, Coiling, Slab Work, and Glazing. Yang Ce, the instructor, focuses on texture and creativity, urging students to develop their own unique styles in ceramics.

In addition to workshops, Synceramic offers a variety of products, including functional tableware and decorative pieces. The studio is also home to the Synceramic Collective, a group of collaborating artists who showcase their work in the space. What distinguishes Synceramic from other studios in Singapore is its commitment to fostering creativity and exploration.

Unlike many other studios that offer one-time experience classes, Synceramic aims to cultivate long-term creativity in its students. Yang Ce tailors classes to fit each student’s progress and encourages them to introduce new materials and concepts. This adaptable, personalized approach creates a dynamic learning environment where creativity can truly flourish.

Synceramic’s Future Plans and Vision

As Synceramic continues to grow, Yang Ce envisions expanding the studio’s reach and influence. While the current location has served as a creative haven for the past two years, she hopes to eventually move to a more central area to attract a larger audience.

Additionally, Synceramic is exploring opportunities for international collaboration. Yang Ce has already begun taking her students overseas for learning exchanges and hopes to invite international ceramic artists to Singapore in the future.

Through these initiatives, Synceramic aims to build a global network of ceramic artists, fostering creativity and cultural exchange. Synceramic is more than just a ceramics studio; it’s a space where creativity is nurtured, and clay becomes a medium of expression. As the studio continues to evolve, it remains dedicated to inspiring both new and seasoned artists alike.
